Field Marshal Georgy Zhukov:
Georgy Konstantinovich Zhukov was a Soviet field marshal who was renowned for his prowess on the battle field. He is rumored to be better or on par with Germany's own best commander, Erich von Manstein. He shone the most during the war. He was also the pioneer of the Soviet advance during World War II. Some of his famous conquests were the taking of Stalingrad and Berlin. His first test came at Stalingrad where most of the German 6th army had overrun them. In an ingenious move, he penetrated Romanian lines which were equipped with poor armor taken from the French and caught the Germans in a pincer movement dubbed Operation Uranus. Due to this it may have cause jealousy in the eyes of other generals and as such they sought to defame him. Some rumors that were leaked to the media were that he had some fake medals to put on so as to look good when the Germans were negotiating for surrender.
Hephaestion:
Hephaestion was Alexander the Great's dearest friend as he had been raised with the king and shared all his secrets. He was a general and son of a Macedonian nobleman. Their friendship was so great that they and many saw its resemblance to Archilles and Patroclus. (Note:Alexander always envisioned himself as Archilles and saw him as a sort of idol). Alexander made him second in command of the empire and was very distraught at the time of his death at Ecbatana. He even went so far as to kill the doctor who failed to cure Hephaestion of the 'fever' by tying his hands between two trees and cutting the rope so he dies and his hands get severed off. Ironically, by doing this, he would end up sealing his own fate by causing hate within the doctor's assistant, who refused to give him the draught(their remedy for the fever) as revenge for killing the doctor.
Mark Antony:
Mark Antony was a Roman politician and general. He was a loyal friend of Julius Caesar and when Caesar was assassinated, he and Octavian Caesar formed the Second Triumvirate to avenge his friend. After taking revenge on Caesar's assains, the triumvirate broke up in. Disagreemenst between Octavian and Antony erupted into civil war,and the final war of the Roman Republic. Antony was defeated by Octavian at the naval Battle of Actium, and in a short land battle at Alexandria. He and Cleopatra committed suicide shortly afterwards. His career and defeat play a significant role in Rome's transformation from a Republic to an Empire.
ILOVE all the historical figures you featured today. I have suggestions, of course.
ReplyDeleteThe French Revolution, Emperor Nero (maybe you could also talk about how there were so many Romans trying to grab the throne that no living ruler reigned for long because people assassinated him), Elagabagus. Also look at important women in history, like Elizabeth I, Joan of Arc, etc.
